Packing for a Cold Trip: A Jacket Checklist

Categories:

Packing for cold weather can feel like fitting an entire wardrobe into a small bag. A short, clear checklist makes it manageable and helps you stay warm without overpacking.

Start with the jacket you will wear while traveling, since it takes up the most space. Wearing your bulkiest layer on the plane or train saves luggage room and keeps you warm in transit.

Choose a packable insulated layer that compresses small, a weatherproof shell for wind or rain, and two or three base layers you can wash and reuse. Add a hat, gloves, a neck gaiter or scarf and warm socks, because extremities lose heat first.

Before you leave, check the forecast for your destination and for the coldest hour you will be outside, not the daytime high. Pack for that moment and you will be comfortable for the rest.
