How to Wash and Care for Your Winter Jacket

Categories:

A good jacket can last many winters if you look after it. Washing it correctly protects the insulation and any water-repellent finish, and it is simpler than many people fear.

Always start with the care label, since materials and finishes differ. As a general rule, close all zips and fasteners, use a gentle cycle with a mild detergent made for outdoor gear, and avoid fabric softener, which can clog fabrics and reduce performance.

Dry carefully. Down jackets usually dry best on low heat in a dryer with a couple of clean tennis balls, which help break up clumps and restore loft. Synthetic jackets often dry faster, and some tolerate only air drying, so check the label first.

If water no longer beads on the surface, the repellent finish has worn down. A wash followed by a gentle heat cycle, or a spray-on treatment made for your fabric, can often bring it back.
